But I digress – let’s get back to those patterns.
Let’s start with the Beginner Friendly patterns:
The Iris Shawl as knit by woolboots on Ravelry
· Iris Shawl by Danielle Comeau – you’ll need 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn for this lovely shawl. She is knit on US 10 needles in garter stitch. The pattern is available for FREE! Using a tonal yarn as your main color stripes and using the variegated in the alternating stripes would make for a lovely shawl.
Pi Socks as knit by treesourceltd on Ravelry
· Pi Socks by Nicolor Designs – these sweet socks are knit using Fingering/Sock weight yarn on US 1 ½ (2.5mm) needles. The pattern has sizes XS-XL available and it’s a FREE pattern! There are a ton of different options for yarn with this sock – you could knit the entire sock in a single colorway; change out colors for the cuff, heel, and toe; stripes of different colorways; or any combination of colors and patterns you like.
Two by Two hat as knit by LadyAmnesia on Ravelry
· Two by Two by Anne Gagnon – this is a great beginner hat that I have knit for my husband and son a number of times. The pattern calls for Worsted weight yarn and US 6 (4mm) needles. You’ll need 200 yards or a tad less than 1 skein of yarn to complete the project. This is also a FREE pattern!
Quick Ombre Hat as knit by ErynnLeighan on Ravelry
· Quick Ombre Hat by Emily Dormier – while you will technically need 2 skeins of yarn for this pattern, you won’t use all of that yarn, so you could make 2 hats in opposite color patterns. This hat uses Worsted weight yarn and US 8 (5mm) needles and has sizes from preemie to adult men. Another FREE pattern, this one would be great to combine a fun variegated skein with a tonal as pictured here.
Houndstooth Cowl as knit by Maxzipyy on Ravelry
· Houndstooth Cowl by Raging Wool – another great way to pair a variegated yarn with a tonal and a great pattern! This cowl is knit up with Worsted weight yarn on US 5 (3.75mm) and US 6 (4mm) needles. It’s a one-size-fits-all pattern that is FREE!
Sea Glass Tee as knit by ALittleMakes on Ravelry

This is an amazing pattern for variegated yarns, stash busting, or if you want to head over to you LYS (Local Yarn Shop) you can put together your own custom colorway. There is no limit to the color combinations in this pattern. The Tee uses Fingering/Sock weight yarn and US 4 (3.5mm) & US 5 (3.75mm) needles and has 11 size options. The pattern is $8.75. This one is on my short list to get cast on!
