Elevated Colorways for Makers Who Appreciate Craft

Vermont Apples: Pink Lady
from $25.00

🍎 Blushing • Playful • Orchard-Fresh

Pink Lady captures the rosy, freckled skin of a perfectly ripe apple still warm from the late-summer sun. A soft apple-blossom pink base is scattered with delicate speckles, giving the skein just enough variation to feel lively while still behaving beautifully as a coordinating color.

Sweet without being sugary and pink without being precious, Pink Lady brings a cheerful pop of color to socks, shawls, hats, sweaters and colorwork. The speckles add little moments of surprise as you knit, while the gentle pink background keeps the finished fabric wonderfully wearable.

Part of our Vermont Apples Color Story, Pink Lady was created to sit alongside the juicy reds and apple-flesh highlights of Macintosh and the sun-warmed yellow-gold of Ginger Gold. Use the three together for a project that feels like an afternoon spent wandering a Vermont orchard with an empty basket and very optimistic intentions.

Vermont Apples: Ginger Gold
from $25.00

🍎 Golden • Sun-Kissed • Warm

Ginger Gold glows with the warm yellow-gold of an apple ripening beneath the late-summer Vermont sun. Its luminous golden base carries a subtle green cast that mimics the beautifully imperfect skin of the apple that inspired it.

This beautiful golden-yellow color is the perfect accent to other colors, making it an easy choice for larger projects as well as socks, hats, shawls and colorwork. In the skein it feels sunny and fresh; knitted up, it’s like sunlight shining through your project.

Ginger Gold is part of our Vermont Apples Color Story, where it brings the golden side of the orchard to the rosy speckles of Pink Lady and the juicy variegated reds, creams and yellows of Mcintosh. Together, the three feel like a basket of apples gathered on one of those perfect Vermont days when summer hasn't quite left—but fall is already waiting at the edge of the orchard.

Vermont Apples: Mcintosh
from $25.00

🍏 Juicy • Crisp • Orchard-Bright

Mcintosh is the centerpiece of our Vermont Apples Color Story—a juicy variegated skein inspired by the beautiful jumble of colors you'll find in a bag of freshly picked Vermont apples.

Bright apple red mingles with creamy pale yellow, rosy pink, golden yellow-green and touches of deep cider-red, creating a skein filled with the shifting colors of an orchard at harvest time. No two stretches are quite the same, giving your stitches that wonderful just-one-more-row quality as each new color appears.

Mcintosh pairs beautifully with both coordinating colors in the Vermont Apples Color Story. Add Pink Lady for a rosy, speckled companion or Ginger Gold for a sunny golden contrast—or use all three together for a project filled with the colors of a Vermont apple harvest.

It's everything we love about apple season, minus the ladder, the bees and the question of what exactly you're going to do with 27 pounds of apples.

Echoes of Scotland: Highland Copper
from $25.00

Warm • Burnished • Windswept

Highland Copper captures the fiery warmth of a Highland cow’s shaggy coat when the late-day sun catches every russet strand. A glowing copper tonal with earthy orange and chestnut undertones, it feels rustic and refined at the same time—like weathered stone walls, bracken-covered hillsides, and autumn settling over the Scottish Highlands.

Rich enough to make a statement on its own but beautifully coordinated with Chestnut Mare and Heather, Hide & Horn, Highland Copper brings warmth and contrast to the entire Echoes of Scotland color story.

And with this collection, there are even more ways to knit it. Highland Copper is available on our Fingering/Sock, DK, and Worsted bases, along with our two newest additions: cloud-light Super Floof – Lace and wonderfully squishy Softer Than Soft – Bulky.

Echoes of Scotland: Chestnut Mare
from $25.00

Deep • Heathered • Sophisticated

Chestnut Mare is the shadowed side of the Scottish Highlands—a deep, complex tonal where chestnut brown mingles with dusky plum, wine, and smoky heather. Depending on the light, one shade slips into another, creating the kind of depth that makes even simple stitches look beautifully dimensional.

It’s a color that feels timeless: an old leather saddle, a wool coat beside the fire, dark heather on the moor. Pair Chestnut Mare with the warm glow of Highland Copper or let it pull the deeper tones from Heather, Hide & Horn for a beautifully cohesive project.

Part of our Echoes of Scotland color story, Chestnut Mare is available on Fingering/Sock, DK, and Worsted, plus our brand-new Super Floof – Lace and Softer Than Soft – Bulky bases.

Echoes of Scotland: Heather, Hide & Horn
from $25.00

Wild • Weathered • Wonderfully Untamed

Heather, Hide & Horn tells the whole Highland story in one skein. Creamy stretches of natural light sweep into warm copper, chestnut brown, muted heather and smoky dark accents, creating a variegated colorway inspired by shaggy Highland cattle wandering across Scotland’s rugged moors.

There’s enough contrast to keep every row interesting, yet the earthy palette keeps everything beautifully grounded. Look closely and you’ll find echoes of both coordinating tonals—Highland Copper and Chestnut Mare—making this an especially easy colorway to combine in stripes, colorwork, shawls, sweaters and accessories.

Choose it on our familiar Fingering/Sock, DK, or Worsted bases, or experience the colorway in an entirely new way on airy Super Floof – Lace or plush Softer Than Soft – Bulky.

Magic at Midnight - Special Edition
$25.00

🪄Mysterious | Enchanting | Adventurous

Magic at Midnight is a deep navy blue tonal yarn inspired by twilight descending over the slopes of Magic Mountain in Londonderry, Vermont. As the last light fades behind the Green Mountains and the trails slip into shadow, the landscape takes on a rich blue hue that feels equal parts peaceful and magical.

Dyed on a single-ply sock weight base, this colorway has beautiful depth and subtle tonal variation that allows the yarn's texture and character to shine. 🌈Bold | Expressive | Celebratory

This special assigned pooling colorway was created to honor Pride Month and the vibrant beauty of living authentically. A sophisticated platinum gray background provides the perfect canvas for a striking rainbow pooling section, allowing flashes of color to emerge in a purposeful, eye-catching pattern as you knit. Dyed alongside it was a matching platinum tonal skein. The tonals were dyed in the same pan with the platinum portion of the assigned pooling skeins to make a perfectly paired set.

Dyed on a luxurious single-ply sock weight base, this yarn combines elegance and joy in equal measure. The soft silver tones symbolize strength, resilience, and unity, while the rainbow pooling section creates a bold visual statement celebrating diversity, inclusion, and pride. Every stitch becomes part of a larger design, much like every individual contributes to the colorful fabric of a community.

Perfect for shawls and accessories, this colorway creates a project that is both beautiful and meaningful—a wearable reminder that love, identity, and self-expression deserve to be celebrated every day of the year.

  • "The colors are gorgeous and the yarn is so soft. It’s almost too nice to knit socks with as the colors NEED to be seen; so it may have to become a one skein shawl. "

  • "Stunning!! I have not been able to use it but admire it nightly in my calming moment before I put little one to bed. Could not recommend more! "

  • "Vibrant, joyful yarn with the sweetest variegation — perfect for socks! I’m finishing my second pair of socks with this colorway, and it has been an absolute delight from start to finish. The pink is beautifully vibrant, and the way it shifts into purples, lilacs, and little pops of magenta reminds me of those pastel Valentine candy hearts — soft, playful, and nostalgic. It knitted up into the prettiest stripes and speckles without pooling, and the fabric feels smooth, consistent, and bouncy. I paired it with a white toe, and the contrast is gorgeous. I’m planning to add yellow and mint next, and this yarn takes coordinating colors really well. The skein arrived beautifully packaged (just like my previous order), and the quality has been consistent across all the colorways I’ve tried from this shop. I can see the love and care that goes into these batches — it shows in the dye work and in the way it behaves on the needles. If you’re looking for a cheerful, high-energy yarn for socks or accessories, this colorway is truly special. I’ll definitely be ordering more! "

We put color in yarn

Hi, I'm Vicky.

When I'm not working as an Emergency Department nurse, you'll usually find me with knitting needles in hand, dreaming up new color combinations, or in the dye studio creating the next batch of yarn for The Wooly Caterpillar.

What started as a creative outlet quickly became something much bigger. I wanted to create yarn that was beautiful, dependable, and inspiring to knit with—yarn that would make fiber enthusiasts excited to jump into their next project.

Today, every skein of Fox & Owl Dye Lab yarn is hand dyed by me in small batches here in Vermont. Many of our colorways are inspired by the Green Mountains, the changing seasons, memorable personalities we've met along the way, and causes close to our hearts.

We believe that exceptional yarn begins with exceptional materials. That's why we carefully select soft, mulesing-free wool bases that offer beautiful stitch definition and become treasured garments you'll reach for year after year.

The Wooly Caterpillar may be a small family business, but we're committed to providing the kind of quality and customer service that keeps knitters coming back. If you ever have a question or encounter an issue, you'll be speaking directly with the people who dyed, labeled, packed, and shipped your yarn.

Thank you for supporting our dream and allowing us to be part of your creative journey.

Welcome to The Caterpillar Crew,

Vicky & Brian
