Our story
Fox & Owl Dye Lab is a family-owned and operated business in Peru, Vermont, dedicated to providing beautifully dyed yarns. Our mission is to inspire creativity in knitting, crocheting, and any other yarn projects you can imagine by placing our unique yarns in your hands.
We prioritize quality and artistry in every skein we produce. Drawing inspiration from nature, our professions, and even people we know - each batch of yarn is thoughtfully dyed to bring warmth and individuality to crafters’ creations. Our commitment to small-batch production ensures that every colorway tells its own story and offers something special for your next project.
The Team
Vicky – Founder & Chief Creative Officer
Having had multiple careers since I stared working, I have come to realize that all the jobs I have held have been done for someone else or out of convenience. Building The Wooly Caterpillar with my husband, Brian, with help from our family, has been the most exciting, fulfilling, daunting, and scariest thing I have ever done. And this time, we’ve done it for ourselves.
I learned how to knit over twelve years ago when we first moved back to southern Vermont. It seemed like exactly the right hobby - cozy, warm, slow, relaxing - that I needed at the time. I learned the basics, but never progressed past scarves & beanies. Sweaters were beyond intimidating, and colorwork? No way! The yarn - well that was always a draw. Soft, fluffy, comforting, and in every color imaginable - it was like holding soft little rainbow fluff clouds. The process of dyeing was a complete mystery, as was the process of making yarn.
Life moved along, nursing took over all of my time and knitting got pushed to somewhere off the back burner. During the pandemic, ED nursing became a different animal than any of us were used to. It was a fight for life during every shift - for both our patients and sometimes ourselves. As we moved past the COVID years, nursing changed, our patients changed, and eventually burnout became the norm. Re-enter knitting.
We were moving from one small town to another even smaller town 6 miles down the road. That’s when I found a knit blanket kit that I had bought as a Christmas present for my daughter years before. Knitting slowly started creeping back in.
I asked questions of my mother-in-law, who had knit for years, and my step-daughter who probably has forgotten more about knitting than I’ll ever know. They were kind and patient as I frogged hats and tinked back projects trying to get it right.
Once the knitting bug had taken hold for the second time, I couldn’t let it go. I started again with hats and scarves, then my first sweater, and then my first colorwork pieces.
And somewhere along the way I wondered - “why can’t I dye my own yarn?” There it was - the beginning of this dream that has become The Wooly Caterpillar and Fox & Owl Dye Lab.
Our mission is to sell beautiful, hand-dyed yarn, at an affordable price in colors that make folks happy. We sincerely hope that you will love working with our yarns as much as we have loved making them.
Thank you for joining us along the way!
